A Brief History
Wesley Temple African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church celebrates 142 years of loving God and serving the world community. Founded in 1866, our historic church is the oldest African American church in Akron, Ohio. In 1928, African American contractor, Mr Plato built our current edifice. Our church has a pipe organ and our church edifice is an Ohio historical landmark site. Several organizations were founded/organized at our church (including the Akron Branch NAACP). Since its inception, Wesley Temple’s outreach has been visible in the community. Members of the church have been active in local and national leadership and throughout the AME Zion denomination.
